Being Tricky doesn’t sell your personal information for money. But the site shows Google AdSense ads, and when ad cookies run, Google and its partners can receive identifiers (such as cookie IDs and your IP address) and information about the pages you visit. Under some US state privacy laws, including California’s, that can count as a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for targeted (cross-context behavioral) advertising. You have the right to opt out, and this page explains how.
What happens when you opt out
You’ll still see ads, but they’ll be non-personalized: based on the article you’re reading and your approximate location, not on your browsing elsewhere. Google may still use cookies for things like frequency capping, measurement and fraud prevention. Our own anonymous statistics are unaffected because they don’t identify you.
Three ways to opt out
1. Turn on Global Privacy Control (automatic)
If your browser or extension sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we treat it as a valid opt-out for that browser: the site asks Google for non-personalized ads only, and Google also reads GPC in states where the law requires it. You don’t need to do anything else. Some browsers, such as Firefox, Brave and DuckDuckGo, offer GPC built in or as a setting.
2. Use Google’s privacy message
Visitors from US states with these laws can see a privacy message from Google on this site. Choose the opt-out option there. You can open it again at any time with the privacy settings option in that message.
3. Email us
Email privacy@beingtricky.com with the subject “Do Not Sell or Share”. Because we don’t know who you are when you read the site, the browser-based options above take effect immediately. Your email is the right choice for anything linked to you, such as your newsletter subscription or comments. We respond within 15 business days and don’t need any more information than is necessary to act on your request. An authorized agent can make the request for you.
Other ways to limit ad tracking
- Turn off personalized ads for your Google account at My Ad Center.
- Opt out of many ad companies at aboutads.info.
- Block third-party cookies in your browser’s settings.
Opt-outs made with cookies or in your browser apply only to that browser and device. If you clear cookies or switch browsers, choose again (or keep GPC on).
We won’t treat you differently for opting out. For everything else about your data, see our privacy policy.
