Phone wrong time or wrong time zone? Turn on automatic date and time and automatic time zone. On a Galaxy: Settings → General management → Date and time. On Windows 11: Settings → Time & language → Date & time, turn on Set time automatically and select Sync now.
If the clock is exactly one hour off, the time zone or daylight saving setting is wrong. Let the device set the time zone automatically, or pick the right zone by hand.
This week is when wrong clocks show up most. In the UK the clocks went back at 2 a.m. on Sunday 25 October 2026, and in the US daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday 1 November 2026. A device with automatic time and time zone turned on handles both for you. One set by hand doesn’t, and that’s the usual reason a clock ends up an hour out.
We tested the Android steps on a Samsung Galaxy and the Windows steps on a Windows 11 PC. The iPhone and Mac steps are based on Apple’s support pages.
Why is my phone showing the wrong time?
- Automatic time is off. This often happens after someone sets the time by hand once, for a game, an app or a test, and forgets to switch it back.
- The time zone is set manually. After travel, a phone locked to your home zone will be hours out.
- Location is off. Many phones use location to detect the time zone, so with location off they can’t tell you’ve moved.
- No mobile signal. Samsung says automatic time uses your mobile network. Wi-Fi-only tablets and phones without a SIM may not update the same way.
- Daylight saving. A device with a manual time zone, or very old software, may not adjust when the clocks change.
- On a PC: sync turned off, a blocked connection to the time server, a dual-boot setup with Linux, or a weak motherboard (CMOS) battery.
Fix the wrong time on a Samsung Galaxy (tested)
- Open Settings → General management → Date and time.
- Turn on Automatic date and time.
- Turn on Automatic time zone. If there’s an option to set the time zone based on location, turn it on and make sure Location is on.
- Wait a minute. If the time doesn’t change, turn on Airplane mode for a few seconds and off again, or restart the phone, so it checks the network again.
Samsung’s support page points out that apps and websites may not work correctly, and you may see security warnings, when the date and time are wrong. That’s why it’s worth fixing even if you never look at the clock.
Android phone wrong time zone
If the minutes are right but the hour is wrong, the time zone is the problem. Turn on automatic time zone, check that Location is on, and give the phone a few minutes on mobile data. If you’re near a border or using a roaming SIM, the network can report a neighbouring zone. In that case, turn off automatic time zone and pick your city by hand, then switch it back to automatic when you’re home.
Calendar events at the wrong time after travel? Samsung suggests opening the Calendar app → Menu → Settings and using Lock time zone to keep events in one zone.
Galaxy tablets and Wi-Fi-only devices
Samsung notes that some Galaxy Tab Wi-Fi models no longer support automatic time zone, so you need to set the time zone yourself in countries with more than one zone. Automatic time should still work over Wi-Fi.
Pixel and other Android phones
Google’s Pixel help reaches the same settings through the Clock app: tap More → Settings → Change date & time, then turn on Automatic date and time and, under Time zone, Automatic time zone. Google says the phone may use your location to detect the time zone, and some devices can only set the zone that way. In the Settings app it’s usually under System → Date & time.
Fix the time on Windows 11 (tested)
- Open Settings (Win + I) → Time & language → Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically.
- Turn on Set time zone automatically. If you’d rather choose it yourself, turn that off, pick your zone, and make sure Adjust for daylight saving time automatically is on.
- Under Additional settings, select Sync now.
Microsoft notes that when Set time zone automatically is on, daylight saving time is handled automatically too. Windows uses location to detect the zone, so if it keeps choosing the wrong one, set the zone by hand instead. Just upgraded? Windows 11 time wrong after a restart, or Sync now fails
- Sync now gives an error: check your internet connection and try again. A VPN, a strict firewall or a work network can block time sync. Windows uses
time.windows.comby default on home PCs. - Force a sync from the command line: right-click Start, open Terminal (Admin), and run
w32tm /resync. Microsoft’s documentation saysw32tmneeds administrator rights. If it reports that the service hasn’t started, open Services, find Windows Time and start it, then try again. - Wrong after every restart, and you also run Linux: Windows and Linux can read the PC’s hardware clock differently (local time vs UTC), so each one shifts the clock after the other runs. Set Linux to use local time, or set the time from one system only.
- Wrong every time the PC is unplugged: the small CMOS battery on the motherboard may be failing. On a desktop it’s usually a cheap coin cell. On a laptop, ask the manufacturer or a repair shop.
iPhone and Mac (based on Apple’s support pages)
We don’t test on Apple devices. These steps come from Apple’s support documentation.
- iPhone: Settings → General → Date & Time → turn on Set Automatically.
- iPhone time zone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → System Services → turn on Setting Time Zone.
- Mac: System Settings → General → Date & Time → turn on Set time and date automatically and Set time zone automatically using your current location.
- Setting greyed out? Apple says a Screen Time passcode or a work profile with restrictions can stop you changing it, and some carriers or regions don’t support network time.
Daylight saving time: why your clock is exactly one hour off
If your phone is showing the wrong time by exactly an hour, it’s almost always daylight saving or the wrong time zone. Rules differ by country, and many countries don’t change their clocks at all.
| Where | Rule | Autumn 2026 change |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Ends at 2 a.m. local time on the first Sunday of November | Sunday 1 November 2026 |
| Hawaii, most of Arizona, Puerto Rico and other US territories | No daylight saving time | No change |
| United Kingdom | Clocks go back 1 hour at 2 a.m. on the last Sunday of October | Sunday 25 October 2026 |
| European Union | Clocks go back on the last Sunday of October | Sunday 25 October 2026 |
In the US, NIST notes that the Navajo Nation in Arizona does observe daylight saving time, so phones near the edge of it can flip between zones. If your phone keeps jumping by an hour there, set the time zone by hand.
Devices that won’t fix themselves
Phones and computers update on their own. Plenty of other things in the house don’t, so check these after a clock change.
- Microwaves, ovens and coffee makers.
- Many car dashboards. Some update over GPS or from a connected phone, others need setting by hand.
- Older security cameras and video recorders. A wrong timestamp matters if you ever need the footage as evidence.
- Wall and alarm clocks without radio sync.
- Smart plugs, lights and thermostats with schedules. The device may update, but check the schedule still runs at the right hour.
Why a wrong clock causes real problems
- Secure websites fail. Security certificates are only valid for set dates, so a browser can show a certificate or “your clock is ahead/behind” error.
- Sign-in codes stop working. Authenticator apps make codes based on the current time, so a clock that’s a few minutes out can produce codes that get rejected.
- Alarms, reminders and calendar invites go off at the wrong time, especially across time zones.
- Photos and files get the wrong dates, which makes them harder to find later.
Setting up a new phone? Turn on automatic time during setup and you’ll rarely need this page. See our guide to setting up a new Android phone, or browse more fixes in the Android and Windows sections.
FAQ
Why is my phone’s time a few minutes off?
Automatic date and time is probably off, or the phone hasn’t synced with the network recently. Turn on automatic date and time, then toggle Airplane mode or restart the phone.
Why is my clock exactly one hour wrong?
Usually the time zone is set manually or the daylight saving setting is off. Turn on automatic time zone, or pick the right zone and make sure daylight saving is adjusted automatically.
Why does my phone show the wrong time zone?
The phone may not have location access, may be picking up a network from a neighbouring zone, or the time zone was set by hand. Turn on automatic time zone and Location, or choose your city manually.
Why does my Windows 11 clock reset after a restart?
The most common causes are a dual-boot setup with Linux that treats the hardware clock differently, or a failing CMOS battery on the motherboard. Turn on Set time automatically so Windows corrects it once you’re online.
Does a wrong clock cause problems?
Yes. It can break secure websites, sign-ins and two-factor codes, and it moves alarms, reminders and calendar invites.
