Gmail Storage Full? How to Free Up Space Without Paying

Gmail storage full? It’s usually because Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos share the same 15 GB of free space. When it runs out, Gmail can’t send or receive email, and messages sent to you go back to the sender.

Key takeaways

  • Google gives each personal account up to 15 GB of free storage.
  • In the Gmail, Drive or Photos apps you can also tap Manage storage (or Clean up space on iPhone) to open Google's storage manager, which suggests large items and items already in trash.
  • Deleted emails still count against your storage while they sit in Trash.
  • Gmail's search box understands short commands called search operators.
  • If the storage bar showed Drive or Photos as the big users, deleting email won't help much.

Gmail storage full? It’s usually because Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos share the same 15 GB of free space. When it runs out, Gmail can’t send or receive email, and messages sent to you go back to the sender.

Fastest fix: open one.google.com/storage to see what’s using the space, empty Gmail’s Trash and Spam, then search Gmail for has:attachment larger:10M and delete the big emails you don’t need. Clear Drive and Photos trash too.

A “storage full” warning feels urgent, and it is: once you hit the limit, new mail stops arriving. Most accounts fill up with a small number of large files, so you can usually free gigabytes in ten minutes. This guide is part of our Google guides.

Why your Gmail storage is full

Google gives each personal account up to 15 GB of free storage. That space is shared, not split. According to Google, all of these count toward it:

  • Gmail messages and attachments, including the Spam and Trash folders.
  • Files in Google Drive, including PDFs, images and videos, plus Docs, Sheets and Slides files created after June 1, 2021.
  • Photos and videos in Google Photos backed up in Original quality, and Storage saver quality uploads since June 1, 2021.
  • Google Meet recordings.
  • WhatsApp backups and Android device backups on Android phones.

So your inbox may not be the problem at all. A phone that backs up every video to Google Photos can fill the account on its own, and Gmail is simply where you notice it.

What happens when you run out

Google lists the effects plainly. You can’t upload or create files in Drive, you can’t send or receive email in Gmail, and new photos and videos stop backing up to Google Photos. Messages people send you go back to them.

Don’t ignore it for months. Google says that if you’re over your storage quota for 2 years or longer, all of your content may be removed. Google says it will warn you by email at least 3 months before that happens.

Step 1: See what’s using your space

  1. On a computer, go to one.google.com/storage and sign in.
  2. Look at the bar that splits your usage between Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.
  3. Start with whichever is biggest. That’s where cleanup pays off most.

In the Gmail, Drive or Photos apps you can also tap Manage storage (or Clean up space on iPhone) to open Google’s storage manager, which suggests large items and items already in trash.

Step 2: Empty Trash and Spam

Deleted emails still count against your storage while they sit in Trash. Google keeps them for up to 30 days before deleting them for good, so emptying it gives you that space back right away.

  1. In Gmail on a computer, open Trash from the left side. You may need to click More to see it.
  2. In the notification at the top, click Empty Trash now.
  3. Open Spam and delete everything there the same way.

Once Trash is emptied, those messages are gone for good. Glance through it first if you’ve deleted anything recently by mistake.

Step 3: Find and delete large emails

Gmail’s search box understands short commands called search operators. These pull the biggest emails to the top so you’re not deleting messages one by one. Type any of these into the search bar at the top of Gmail:

Type thisWhat it finds
has:attachment larger:10MEmails with attachments bigger than 10 MB
larger:5MAny email bigger than 5 MB
filename:pdf larger:5MLarge PDF attachments
older_than:2y has:attachmentAttachments more than 2 years old
category:promotions older_than:1yOld marketing emails
Operators from Gmail Help. Change the numbers to suit you, for example larger:20M or older_than:5y.
  1. Run a search, for example has:attachment larger:10M.
  2. Tick the box at the top left of the list to select every result on the page.
  3. Untick anything you want to keep, then select Delete.
  4. Go back to Trash and empty it, or the space won’t come back yet.

Need an attachment but not the email? Download it first, then delete the message. Keep a copy somewhere safe: our guide to backing up a Windows PC covers simple options.

Step 4: Clean up Google Drive and Photos

If the storage bar showed Drive or Photos as the big users, deleting email won’t help much. Clean those up instead.

  • Drive: look for your largest files, such as videos and old backups, and remove duplicates. Google’s storage manager can point you to big items. Then empty Drive’s trash, because files there still count.
  • Photos: remove long videos, blurry shots and screenshots you no longer need, then empty Photos’ trash.
  • Backups: Google’s storage manager lists old Android device backups. Delete backups from phones you no longer own.
  • WhatsApp: on Android, backups count toward your Google storage. Turning off video in WhatsApp’s backups can save a lot.

Your phone can fill up for similar reasons. If it’s complaining about space too, see how to free up storage on Android.

Gmail storage full even after cleaning up?

Freed space doesn’t always show up instantly. If the warning won’t go away, check these.

  • Did you empty Trash in every app? Gmail, Drive and Photos each have their own trash, and each one still counts.
  • Is it the right account? If you use more than one Google account, the full one may not be the one you cleaned. Check the profile picture at the top right.
  • Give it time. Storage totals can take a while to update after large deletions.
  • Still out of space? Google sells more storage through Google One plans, where available. Check current prices at one.google.com before you buy.

Watch out for scam emails that say “Your storage is full, click here to keep your photos.” Real warnings appear inside Gmail, Drive and one.google.com. If a message pushes you to pay through an unfamiliar link, don’t click it. Our link safety checker can help you check it first.

FAQ

Will I lose emails if my storage is full?

Not right away. Existing emails stay, but you can’t send or receive new ones and incoming mail goes back to senders. Google says content may be removed only if you stay over quota for 2 years or more, with at least 3 months’ warning.

Does deleting emails free up space immediately?

Only after they leave Trash. Deleted emails sit in Trash for up to 30 days and still count, so click Empty Trash now to get the space back.

Do Google Docs and Sheets count toward my storage?

Yes, files created after June 1, 2021 in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms and some other Google apps count toward your 15 GB, according to Google.

How do I find my biggest emails in Gmail?

Search for larger:10M or has:attachment larger:10M. Lower the number, such as larger:5M, to see more results.

Is 15 GB per service or for everything?

It’s for everything. Gmail, Drive and Photos share the same 15 GB on a free personal account.
