iPhone battery draining fast on iOS 26? First open Settings → Battery. Read any suggestions above the Daily Usage chart, and look at which apps used the most power today.

Then turn on Adaptive Power or Low Power Mode in Settings → Battery → Power Mode, lower screen brightness, and limit Background App Refresh and Location Services. If you just updated, give it a few days before you worry.

Most battery drain has a simple cause: a fresh update still working in the background, one app misbehaving, a bright screen or a weak cell signal. The 10 fixes below follow Apple’s own guidance for iOS 26, starting with the ones that take seconds.

Why is my iPhone battery draining fast?

  • A recent update. Apple says some update tasks keep running in the background for a while after you install iOS.
  • One heavy app. Video, games, navigation and social apps with autoplay use the most power.
  • The screen. High brightness and a long Auto-Lock time drain the battery steadily.
  • Weak signal. Your iPhone works harder to stay connected when cellular coverage is poor.
  • An aging battery. Every battery holds less charge over time.

10 fixes for an iPhone battery draining fast

1. Give it a few days after an update

Apple says that if battery life drops after an update, you should wait a few days and check again. Your iPhone keeps indexing and finishing update tasks in the background, which can affect battery life and make it feel warm. Keep it charging overnight for a couple of nights so those tasks can finish.

2. Check Battery suggestions and Daily Usage

  1. Open Settings and tap Battery.
  2. Read any suggestions or Insights just above Daily Usage. iOS may point out that Auto-Brightness or Auto-Lock is off, or that your brightness is higher than recommended.
  3. Look at the Daily Usage chart. Apple says it compares today with the previous seven days and lists the three apps that used the most battery.
  4. Tap an app to see why, such as background activity or poor signal.

If one app stands out, update it, close it when you’re done, or delete and reinstall it. If you don’t need it, uninstall it.

3. Update iOS and your apps

Bug fixes often include battery fixes. Go to Settings → General → Software Update to install the latest version of iOS 26. Then open the App Store, tap your profile picture and update your apps.

4. Turn on Adaptive Power

Adaptive Power is new in iOS 26. Apple says it learns your usage and makes small adjustments when you’ll need more battery than usual, such as slightly lower brightness and less background activity. It can also turn on Low Power Mode at 20 percent.

  1. Open Settings → Battery → Power Mode.
  2. Turn on Adaptive Power.
  3. Optional: turn on Adaptive Power Notifications to see when it steps in.

It works on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and newer models in Apple’s list. Apple says it’s on by default for the iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air, but off by default on iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro models. It needs about seven days to learn your habits before it starts working.

5. Use Low Power Mode when you need it

Go to Settings → Battery → Power Mode and turn on Low Power Mode. Apple says it limits things like Mail fetch, “Hey Siri,” some visual effects and background refresh until you charge. It’s the quickest way to get through a long day.

6. Tame the screen

  • Lower the brightness: swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center and drag the brightness slider down.
  • Turn on Auto-Brightness: go to Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size and turn on Auto-Brightness.
  • Shorten Auto-Lock: go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock and choose a shorter time.
  • Consider Always On Display: on models that have it, you can turn it off in Settings → Display & Brightness.

7. Limit Background App Refresh

Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh. Turn it off for apps that don’t need fresh content the moment you open them, or set the top option to Wi-Fi only. Messaging and navigation apps can stay on.

8. Trim Location Services

Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services. Check apps set to Always and change most to While Using the App or Never. Shopping and social apps rarely need your location in the background.

9. Use Wi-Fi when you can and watch weak signal

Apple says using Wi-Fi uses less power than cellular data, so connect to trusted Wi-Fi at home and work. On 5G iPhones, check Settings → Cellular → Voice & Data and choose 5G Auto, which uses 5G only when it won’t noticeably cut battery life.

10. Keep it cool and check Battery Health

Apple says iPhones work best between 32° and 95° F (0° to 35° C). Heat above that can permanently reduce battery capacity. Don’t leave your phone in a hot car or direct sun, and take it out of thick cases if it gets warm while charging.

  1. On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health. On older models, open Battery Health & Charging.
  2. Check Maximum Capacity.
  3. If you see Service next to Battery Health, Apple suggests considering a battery replacement.

Apple designs most older iPhone batteries to keep about 80% of their capacity at 500 charge cycles, and iPhone 15 models at 1,000 cycles, under ideal conditions.

If your iPhone battery still drains fast

  • Restart your iPhone. It clears stuck processes and is worth doing after the fixes above.
  • Look for an app you don’t recognize near the top of Daily Usage. If anything else seems off, like unknown apps or pop-ups, read Is my phone hacked?
  • Book a battery check with Apple Support or an Apple Store if Battery Health shows Service or the phone shuts down unexpectedly.
