The quickest way to take a screenshot on Windows 11 is Win + Shift + S. Drag over the area you want, and it’s copied to your clipboard, ready to paste.

To save the whole screen as a file instead, press Win + PrtScn. It goes to Pictures → Screenshots. For just the active window, press Alt + PrtScn.

Windows 11 has several ways to capture your screen, and they behave a little differently. Some copy to the clipboard, some save a file, and some let you draw on the image first. Here’s each method, when to use it, and where your screenshots end up.

Quick reference: screenshot shortcuts

ShortcutWhat it capturesWhere it goes
Win + Shift + SAn area you selectClipboard; open in Snipping Tool to mark up
PrtScnAn area you selectClipboard; open in Snipping Tool to mark up
Win + PrtScnThe full screenA file in Pictures → Screenshots

1. Win + Shift + S: grab part of the screen

  1. Press Win + Shift + S. The screen dims and a small toolbar appears at the top.
  2. Pick a mode: Rectangle, Window, Full screen or Freeform.
  3. Drag over the area, or click the window you want.
  4. Paste it with Ctrl + V into an email, chat or document. To edit or save it, open it in Snipping Tool.

This is the best all-round method. You choose exactly what to capture, so you don’t share anything private that’s elsewhere on your screen.

2. Print Screen: the one-key option

Microsoft’s shortcut list says PrtScn selects a region of the screen and copies the screenshot to the clipboard, the same as Win + Shift + S. On many laptops the key is labeled PrtSc or PrtScn, and you may need to hold Fn to use it. Key labels differ by model.

3. Win + PrtScn: save a full screenshot on Windows 11

Press Win + PrtScn to capture everything on the screen and save it straight to a file. Microsoft says it lands in the Screenshots subfolder of your Pictures folder. Use this when you need several screenshots in a row and don’t want to paste each one.

4. Alt + PrtScn: capture just one window

Click the window you want, then press Alt + PrtScn. Windows copies only that window to the clipboard. It’s handy for sharing an error message without showing the rest of your desktop.

5. Use the Snipping Tool app

Snipping Tool gives you the most control. Select Start, type snipping tool, and open Snipping Tool.

  • Snipping Mode: choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen or Freeform.
  • Delay: wait 1 to 5 seconds before the capture, so you can open a menu or tooltip first.
  • Mark up: use Pen or Highlighter to draw on the snip, and Eraser to remove marks.
  • Text actions: pull text out of the image so you can copy it. Quick redact can hide email addresses and phone numbers.
  • Share: select the See More menu at the top right, then Share.

Microsoft says snips are saved automatically to your Screenshots folder, and you can change that location in Snipping Tool’s Settings. You can still copy any snip with Ctrl + C.

6. Win + Shift + R: record your screen

Need to show steps instead of a still image? Press Win + Shift + R, select an area and start recording. Microsoft says the recording opens in Snipping Tool and, by default, is saved as an MP4 in the Screen Recordings subfolder of your Videos folder.

Where do screenshots go on Windows 11?

  • Clipboard only: Win + Shift + S, PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn. Paste them somewhere or they’re replaced by the next thing you copy.
  • Pictures → Screenshots: Win + PrtScn, and snips taken in Snipping Tool.
  • Videos → Screen Recordings: screen recordings.

Sending screenshots by email or uploading them to a website? Shrink them first with our free image compressor. Large full-screen captures can be several megabytes.

Which screenshot method should you use?

  • Quick share in a chat or email: Win + Shift + S, then paste. No file to clean up later.
  • A record you want to keep: Win + PrtScn, so every capture is saved to a folder automatically.
  • An error message or one app: Alt + PrtScn, or Window mode in Snipping Tool.
  • A menu that closes when you click away: Snipping Tool with a delay of a few seconds.
  • Showing someone how to do something: a short screen recording with Win + Shift + R.

How to save a screenshot from the clipboard

Shortcuts that copy to the clipboard don’t create a file by themselves. To keep one, paste it into an app with Ctrl + V and save from there, or open it in Snipping Tool, which saves snips to your Screenshots folder. Paint works too: open it, paste, and save the image as a PNG or JPG. Remember the clipboard holds one item at a time, so paste a screenshot before you copy anything else.

Screenshot shortcuts not working?

If nothing happens when you press the keys, try the Fn key with PrtScn on a laptop, check that another app isn’t using the Print Screen key, and make sure Snipping Tool is up to date. Our full guide covers every fix: Snipping Tool not working in Windows 11.

Before you share a screenshot

Check the edges of the image for open tabs, email addresses, names or notifications you didn’t mean to include. Crop or redact them in Snipping Tool first. Find more Windows tips in our Windows section, or see the Windows 11 settings worth changing.
