ChatGPT plans and prices
- Free ($0): unlimited everyday text chats, with limits on uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and memory.
- Go ($8 a month): more messages with tools, uploads, image creation and memory than Free. OpenAI’s pricing page says this plan may include ads.
- Plus ($20 a month): advanced reasoning models, more deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and more Codex use. OpenAI says Plus stays ad-free.
- Pro ($100, $200 or $500 a month): three usage levels, called Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500. Only Pro 500 includes the Ultrafast option.
OpenAI bills Go, Plus and Pro monthly only. There’s no annual discount for individuals. Business plans start at two users.
Google Gemini (Google AI plans) prices
Google sells Gemini upgrades as Google AI plans through Google One, so each one bundles cloud storage for Gmail, Drive and Photos.
- Free ($0): the Gemini app with your regular 15 GB of Google storage.
- Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month): about twice the Gemini access of non-subscribers, Gemini in Gmail, and 400 GB of storage.
- Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month or $199.99 a year): about four times the access, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, 5 TB of storage, and YouTube Premium Lite.
- Google AI Ultra (from $99.99 a month): up to 20 times the access, Deep Think, at least 20 TB of storage, and the YouTube Premium individual plan.
All three paid plans let you share with up to five other people in your Google family group, which makes Google the only one of the four where the AI plan itself is shareable.
Claude plans and prices
- Free ($0): chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, code execution, memory and up to 5 projects.
- Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly as $200): more usage, Claude Code, Research, Projects (Free is capped at 5) and more Claude models.
- Max 5x ($100 a month) and Max 20x ($200 a month): five or 20 times Pro’s usage per session, higher output limits and priority at busy times. Max is billed monthly only.
For workplaces, Claude Team costs $25 per standard seat billed monthly, or $20 a month billed yearly. Anthropic offers Claude for Education to universities as a campus-wide plan, but it doesn’t list a discount students can buy on their own.
Microsoft Copilot prices
Copilot has a free version. Microsoft’s paid Copilot features for home users now come bundled with Microsoft 365, and the old Copilot Pro store page points to Microsoft 365 Premium.
- Microsoft 365 Personal ($9.99 a month or $99.99 a year): one person, 1 TB of storage, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook with Copilot, and higher Copilot usage than free.
- Microsoft 365 Family ($12.99 a month or $129.99 a year): the apps and 1 TB each for up to six people, but the AI features are for the subscription owner only.
- Microsoft 365 Premium ($19.99 a month or $199.99 a year): everything in Family plus Copilot’s “extensive” usage and agent features such as advanced research. AI is still for the owner only.
Each Microsoft 365 plan offers a one-month free trial, and the plans renew automatically unless you cancel in your Microsoft account.
Which plan is worth paying for?
- You use AI a few times a week: stay on the free plans. All four are capable for everyday questions and short writing.
- You want to spend under $10: Google AI Plus if you also need more Google storage, ChatGPT Go if ChatGPT is the one you already use.
- You live in Gmail and Google Docs: Google AI Pro, since the 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite add value beyond the chatbot.
- You already pay for Office: compare Microsoft 365 Personal or Premium with what you pay now. The AI comes with apps you’d buy anyway.
- You write code or long documents: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both include coding tools (Codex and Claude Code). Try each free plan first.
- You hit limits every day: only then look at Pro, Max or Ultra. Start with the lowest top tier and move up if you need to.
Official ways to pay less
- Pay yearly where it’s offered. Claude Pro is $200 a year instead of $240 over 12 months. Google AI Pro is $199.99 a year instead of $239.88. Microsoft 365 Premium saves $39.89 a year on yearly billing. ChatGPT doesn’t offer yearly billing for individuals.
- Students: Google offers a student deal on Google AI plans with SheerID verification. When we checked, it was a year of Google AI Pro at no cost. Microsoft gives college students 50% off Microsoft 365 Personal. See our guide to student discounts on Spotify, YouTube Premium and Amazon Prime for more.
- Teachers: OpenAI offers ChatGPT for Teachers free to verified US K-12 educators through June 2027.
- Families: one Google AI plan can be shared with up to five people. Microsoft 365 Family shares apps and storage, but not the AI.
- Nonprofits: OpenAI says nonprofits can get up to 75% off ChatGPT Business or Enterprise.
